1594-A OR 1594-B ???

what is the difference in a 1594-A and 1594-B
( i have a chance to buy a par of one or the
other )

BOTH are good amplifiers - full duty cycle power transformers, large, Peerless output transformers, etc.

The "A" was developed for the U.S. Navy (with their money), and so they have a postive chassis ground - something that the other electronics in the amplifier cabinets DID NOT like!

The "B" was more stable, and the chassis was changed to negative ground - as it should be!

You should send your purchase to IraTec Pro Audio for proper adjustments....then it should last for years...

B by far.

For all the reasons stated above.

You don't want a + chassis ground less stable amplifier in MHO.

Assuming you plan on using them of course.

For a museum perhaps the A might make some sense for the novelty factor.

Not quite - the 1594B wasn't a biamplifier - that was the Altec 1609A.

I liked the 1609A - it was a 1594 & 1593 built together with a switchable electronic crossover: 100watts for the LF, and 50watts for the HF.

The 1609A worked really well, I always thought...

The Altec 1609A worked very well and was flexible.

We used a ton of those in school auditoriums and churches.

A few minor problems with them such as power switches falling apart when used a lot, and occasionally a noisy crossover.

Other than that leave them on and let them play. Plenty of power for a wide variety of Altec horns and cabinets.

1594B was also a fine amplifier much better than the odd A version.
